About the talk
Traditional Chinese ink art consists of four major genres, namely poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal-carving. These four Chinese artforms transverse and cross-fertilise to enrich the Chinese culture across centuries. Among them, Chinese seal-carving presents itself as a topic of discussion with many possibilities. Be it on material, historical movements and influences, or individual artistic styles, they all avail as separate entities of potential artistic discourse.
This talk will focus on ceramic seal and shall presents two prolific ceramic seal-carvers in Singapore, artists Oh Chai Hoo and Chua Chon Hee. It will discuss the reason of their choice of this material; their artistic conceptualization and methods/techniques of creation; as well as the potential of this artform in our today’s context. Along the way, they shall share their clay seal creations and artistic journeys.
About the speaker
Oh Chai Hoo (b1960), graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1982. A member of Siaw Tao Seal-carving, Calligraphy and Painting Society, Chai Hoo was also its vice-chairperson from 2013 – 2021. He is well-versed in various genres and mediums in visual arts, transversing freely between both Western and Asian art forms. In recent years, he ventured into ceramic seals, combining 3D sculpture, ceramic art and Chinese seal-carving. This artistic fusion provides a platform for him to materialize his concepts more readily. His artworks are exhibited both in Singapore and internationally; they are in both private and institutional collections, including the National Museum of Singapore and the Istana.
Chua Chon Hee (b1960) graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1980. Both an art educator as well as an art practitioner, Chon Hee focuses on print-making and ceramic art. Of late, she combines her skills in ceramic art with Chinese seal-carving to create unique ceramic seal pieces. She participates actively in various solo and group shows, both locally and overseas. Her works are collected by various organisation, including One Farrer Hotel.
