Tong Wei straddles the line between science and art – a physician specialising in diabetes and endocrinology on one hand, and a promising artist in Chinese calligraphy, painting, and seal carving on the other.

Tong Wei started learning Chinese calligraphy since the age of 7, first from his father, and later on refined his skills and learnt seal carving under the tutelage of Master Ha Chan Kee in Kuala Lumpur. He also drew much inspiration from his encounters with his grandteacher, Master Dai Lancun in Taipei. He frequently infuses his works with refreshing modern touches while maintaining elegance and classical eminence stemming from the traditional qualities of Chinese art. He is particularly meticulous in his selection of paper, brush, ink, seals and mounting, all of which enhance the finesse of his works.

His works have been displayed in over 40 exhibitions locally and internationally, including at the prestigious National Art Museum of China, Beijing, and the University of Cambridge, England. An eloquent speaker, he has delivered lectures and media interviews across Singapore and Malaysia, with an emphasis on cultivating greater appreciation of the arts.

He was accorded the Dr. Tan Tsze Chor distinction award in Chinese calligraphy in 2016, and was one of the youngest to be recognised with an invitation to be an Honorary Councillor for the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore the following year. He held his maiden solo exhibition “Unceasing” at the Visual Arts Centre in 2019, supported by the National Arts Council, Singapore. He serves as the secretary for Siaw-Tao Chinese Seal-Carving, Calligraphy and Painting Society, Singapore.
